Blank contribution due to impurities in the reagents used especially the acid used to prepare standards and samples, directly impacts the quality of analytical data. ICP-MS users typically use high purity grade acid (typically 10-50 ppt impurities) for sample dilution and standards prep. At around $500 for 500mL however, high purity grade acid is expensive. The Savillex DST-1000 acid purification system is a sub-boiling still manufactured from PFA that produces high purity acid from much cheaper, lower grade acids - on demand. The DST-1000 is the most efficient and economical way to get a supply of high purity acid in your lab whenever you need it.

The DST-1000 operates on the principle of sub-boiling. It consists of a PFA still with an electric heating source and a PFA collection system. Low grade acid is poured into the reservoir via a funnel and gently heated (below boiling point). Pure acid vapor is generated and condenses on the upper surface of the still and is collected in a 1L Savillex PFA bottle. Because the acid never boils, no spitting or splashing occurs, so trace metal contaminants remain in the residual acid in the reservoir, which is drained to waste. The still is air-cooled - no cooling water is needed. The DST-1000 can purify HNO3, HCl, HF, H2O and also water but not H2SO4 or H3PO4 since their boiling points are too high. All wetted surfaces are high purity PFA. Starting with trace metal (ppb level) grade acid at ~$50-$80 for 500mL, the DST-1000 can produce 500mL of high purity (low ppt) grade acid a $400 value - in around 10 hours. The DST-1000 is very easy to use and extremely compact at only 20cm wide, takes up only a small amount of space in a fume hood.
